Water-Based vs Silicone Lubricant: Which Is Right for You?

Lubricant is one of the most underrated essentials in any intimate wellness routine. It makes everything feel better, reduces discomfort, and helps protect both you and your toys. But with two main types available, water-based and silicone, how do you know which one to choose?

Water-Based Lubricant

Water-based lubricant is the most versatile option and the one we recommend for most people.

Pros

  • Safe to use with all sex toy materials, including silicone toys
  • Easy to clean up, washes off with water
  • Gentle on sensitive skin
  • Available in a wide range of formulas including flavoured and warming varieties

Cons

  • Doesn't last as long as silicone-based lube and may need reapplying
  • Can dry out faster, especially during longer sessions

Silicone-Based Lubricant

Silicone lubricant is thicker, longer-lasting, and great for certain situations.

Pros

  • Lasts much longer without needing to reapply
  • Excellent for use in water (bath, shower, pool)
  • Very silky and smooth feel

Cons

  • Cannot be used with silicone toys: silicone lube can degrade silicone toy materials over time
  • Harder to wash off
  • Not suitable for use with latex condoms in some formulas

Which Should You Choose?

As a general rule: if you're using a silicone toy, always use water-based lubricant. If you're using glass, metal, or ABS plastic toys, or no toy at all, silicone lubricant is a great option for longer-lasting comfort.

For anal play, a thicker water-based lubricant is usually the best choice. Read our beginner's guide to anal play for more tips.
